WRITING CRITIQUE
CRITIQUE FOR CREATIVE WRITERS
INSTRUCTOR: JACQUELINE VIOLA MOUTLON
Looking to take your creative writing up a notch? A critique group is one of the best avenues to challenge yourself and your writing! This course creates an engaging, group environment devoted to learning, practicing, and delving into the art of giving and receiving feedback on specific writing pieces.
Each week for this course all of us, the instructor included, will read one piece of writing from one of the participants and will give feedback, thoughts, insights, questions, suggestions to that piece! During our class time we will discuss the piece we all read previously and also there will be some time to do some writing practice and work that will come out of the weekly discussion.
Feeling intimidated by giving and receiving feedback? No worries - this course will go over best practices for giving feedback and will walk through the etiquette of it and how to both offer it and get it back in return!
This written feedback will be done outside of class time and so you will need some time outside of class to read a piece of writing and to give feedback - but this should take an hour or at most two of time and should feel very do-able.
Levels: all levels of writers welcome, but you will need to have prepared a finished piece of writing to share with the group. Some writing experience will be very helpful for this course - but you do not need to be “advanced” in order to learn and grow from this course. There won’t be time in class to write the piece that you will want feedback on, so a somewhat finished draft by the beginning of class is helpful! Once the participants are confirmed for this class, the instructor will reach out and let everyone know the length of pieces for the feedback/critique session.

MATERIALS
You won’t need a computer during our class sessions, but access to a computer and also google docs will be needed - as you will give and receive feedback via google docs on google drive. We will go over this our first session, but a bit of working knowledge on how to use google docs is helpful. Please don’t let this be a hindrance to taking this course, so reach out if you have questions and there are lots of ways to make this easy and accessible!
